Community Petition: Reinstate the TTC Streetcar Stop at Dundas Street East and Sackville Street

Background

In 2019, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) removed the streetcar stop at Dundas Street East and Sackville Street in Regent Park, consolidating service to the Regent Park Boulevard intersection. This change, implemented without meaningful community consultation, was part of the ActiveTO initiative to expand cycling infrastructure along Dundas Street.

While we support efforts to improve active transportation and bike safety, these changes must not come at the expense of equitable, accessible public transit—especially in a community like Regent Park, where many residents are transit-dependent and face systemic barriers to mobility.

Why This Matters

  • Seniors and residents with accessibility challenges, particularly those living at 252 Sackville Street (Toronto Seniors Housing), relied on the Sackville stop to access essential services.

  • Pregnant Indigenous women and families accessing culturally safe care at the Toronto Birth Centre now face longer, riskier routes—particularly in harsh weather—jeopardizing their access to perinatal health services.

  • Seniors attending diabetes education and exercise programs at the Regent Park Community Health Centre (RCHC) now struggle with longer walks to and from transit, increasing the risk of falls and missed appointments.

Families and youth accessing the Regent Park Community Centre must now walk further to reach recreation services, placing additional burden on caregivers, especially in winter months.

Our Community’s Request

We, the residents, organizations, and supporters of the Regent Park community, respectfully call on the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), City of Toronto, and the City’s Accessibility Advisory Committee to:

  1. Reinstate the TTC streetcar stop at Dundas St. East and Sackville St. to ensure equitable access for seniors, families, people with disabilities, and health care clients.

  2. Preserve the existing TTC stops at Regent Park Boulevard and Parliament Street to maintain transit connectivity across the neighbourhood.

  3. Commit to inclusive, community-informed transit planning that balances cycling, pedestrian, and public transit infrastructure—without disadvantaging already marginalized communities.

Why It’s Urgent

The continued absence of this critical stop has created unintended harm and avoidable risks, undermining Toronto’s stated commitments to:

  • Transit equity and accessibility

  • Health and community well-being

  • Inclusive and responsive public planning

Restoring this stop is a concrete and achievable step toward making Toronto a safer and more accessible city for all residents—especially those who need it most.
